Hisham Mohamed Ismaeil El-Sawah;

Abstract

The relation between pituitary-thyroid axis and irritable bowel syndrome will begin to have a great deal of interest, as it may be one of the hidden causes of IBS, due to the major effect of pituitary thyroid axis on bowel secretion and motility by direct and indirect effect.

Our present study included sixty patients with irritable bowel syndrome classified into 3 groups according to their major complain, 20 patients with constipation predominant, 20 patients with diarrhea predominant and 20 patients with alternating constipation and diarrhea.

They were compared to 20 normal control persons regarding their serum

T3, T4 and TSH.

A wide range of investigations have been used to exclude any organic disease before the diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome.

The T3, T4 and TSH measurements in constipation group were insignificantly lower than the control group, while in diarrhea group this measurements were insignificantly higher than the control group.

Measurements of alternating type group were nearly equal to the control

group and to the overall cases of JBS.

The T3 and TI measurements in constipation group were significantly lower than diarrhea group, TSH measurements was also lower in constipation group than diarrhea group, but insignificantly.
Ten patients from the constipation group with the lowest TSH values have been subjected to TRH stimulation test. Seven of these patients
