The Effect of Using a Study Skills Training Program on First Year Secondary School Students' Acquisition and Use of these Skills

Abstract

The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of a study skills training program on first year secondary school students' acquisition and use of these skills .One hundred forty four students at Kolosna Co education Secondary School , Samalout City , in Minia were randomly divided into a control group and an experimental group .While the students of the experimental group were trained and instructed in a program of study skills , the students of the control group were taught according to the text book plan of Hello 6, the book used at this grade in TEFL. Tools of the study included a study skills training program, a test in the acquisition of study skills, a test in the use of study skills and the Mental Abilities Test. Results revealed that the experimental group surpassed the control group on the post test of the acquisition of study skills and on the post test of the use of these skills. The study showed no significant differences between males and females of the experimental group. Recommendations and suggestions for further studies were presented in the light of the study results.
