Sedimentology And Radioactivity of Quaternary Sediments, West Bir Dungul area, Western Desert, Egypt

Hamed Ibrahim EI Sayed Mira;

Abstract

The present work deals with sedimentology, mineralogy, geochemistry and radioactivity of the Quaternary deposits in west Bir Dungul area . These

sediments are deposited in low-lying flat area or basins which are structurally controlled and represent zones of major faults. Also, these basins may be formed by weathering effects .

The area of study ( west Bir Dungul area ) lies in the southern part of the Western Desert where it is located between long. 31° 12 , 31° 50 E and lat.23° 9, 23° 34 N.. It has an arid climate with low rainfall and high evaporation. GeomorphologicaUy it is characterized by several geomorphic
units as the Nubia plain, the scarp, the plateau, basins, residual hills, aeolion
land forms and drainage lines

The study of drainage lines in the area shows that , they are of dendritic to angular and rectangular dendritic types where they are affected by the lithological characteristics of the rocks. Four orders were recorded for these drainage patterns . The first and second orders represent the majority of the total orders in the studied drainage ( 81.95 % ) while the third and fourth ones are of minor presentation ( 18.05 % ) .
• The rose diagrams constructed for the drainage lines revealed that,
about 8 trend sets were recorded and the most pronounced trend are the

N-S, NE and NW trends in decreasing order .

The exposed rocks in west Bir Dungul area include granitic and syenitic basement rocks and sedimentary rocks.The stratigraphic sedimentary succession ranges in age from Middle Cretaceous to Recent, where the exposed sedimentary rock units are Nubia sandstones, Dakhla, Kurkur,Garra and Dungul formations and Quaternary deposits .
