Efficacy and safety of probiotic versus conventional treatment of Irritable bowel syndrome

Ahmed Salem Elmetwally;

Abstract

Irritable bowel syndrome is a gastrointestinal syndrome characterized by chronic abdominal pain and a change in intestinal habits without any organic cause. It affects 11% of the world-wide population. irritable bowel syndrome reduces health-related quality of life and leads to a significant economic healthcare burden.
Although the exact etiology and pathogenesis underlying irritable bowel syndrome are still incompletely understood, studies show that irritable bowel syndrome was associated with the gastrointestinal microbiota, chronic low-grade mucosal inflammation, altered regulation of the gut brain axis, immune function, visceral hypersensitivity, and psychosocial factors
Since Irritable bowel syndrome include a variety of manifestations, its treatment depends on dominant symptoms and irritable bowel syndrome type.
Probiotics are defined as ‘live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amount confer health benefits to the host’. Probiotics were originally used to improve the health of both animals and humans through the modulation of the intestinal microbiota
