PRINCIPALS FOR NEW ARCHITECTURAL ADDITIONS TO HISTORICAL BUILDINGS

Abstract

Due to the technical and urban development there is an urgent need to rehabilitate and a re-use historical building in a way not only harmonizes and matches the building with its new content, but also turns the historical building into a tool for future development. There were many methods of reviving historical and valuable buildings with the community once again. One of those methods is adding a new block (building) to the historical building. But before starting the process of designing the new part to be added to the historical building, it’s important to study well the content of this historical building and define its determinants for example (engineering determinants – formalism determinants - functional determinants - cultural determinants – social determinants – historical determinants - urban determinants – architectural determinants). Then try to use the outputs of studying those determinants as principles for the designing of the new block. Therefore, the aim of the research is to deduct the elements of achieving physical and moral compatibility between the old architectural formation represented in the historical building and the new architectural formation added to it. Then at the end the research answers the question of “How appropriate are the different styles of new architectural additions to the historical building with the contemporary Egyptian society?” The methodology of the research study was divided into three graded steps starting from the inductive, analytical to investigative approach until reaching the results that are analyzed to reach the aim of the research and come out with recommendations and development standards. So this research studies the definitions of the historical buildings and its classifications, the definitions of the value in the historical buildings, the various methods of preservation used with heritage buildings. Then studies the definitions and determinants of Architectural and urban character and how to preserve this character in the case of adding a new architectural block to a historical building.
