Study of the relationship between Insulin-Like Growth Factor 1, Myostatin and muscle status in a sample of Egyptian patients on Hemodialysis

Abstract
The present study was conducted for evaluating the relationship between Insulin-Like Growth Factor 1 and myostatin and Muscle status (strength and mass) in a sample of Egyptian patients on Hemodialysis. The study was a case control study which included 30 apparently healthy individuals as a control group, and 30 patients on hemodialysis (3 sessions/week) with muscle wasting, at the Hemodialysis unit -Ain Shams university Hospitals. The both groups were age and sex matched (> 18 years, and both sex). The results of the study revealed that the patients had significant lower mean weight, and BMI, a significant higher SBP, significant decrease in the hemoglobin concentration, and platelets count, calcium levels, and a significant increase in the phosphorus levels, serum creatinine and serum urea levels. Myostatin was significantly increased, while IGF-1 was found to be significantly decreased. Regarding muscle function tests; there was a significant decrease in hand grip strength, and six minutes walking test, while there was a significant increase in the fatigue severity scale.
