Abstract

Cisplatin(CIS)iswidelyusedincancertreatment, whilehepatotoxicityisoneofitssideeffects.Althoughthereisnoconsensus as to the mechanism of CIS-induced hepatotoxicity, thetwo most widely recognized views are the shift of the antioxidantbalance towards oxidative stress and acceleration of apoptosis. Inthis study, ferulic acid and/or LDR were investigated with regard totheir protective effects against cisplatin-induced hepatotoxicity inrats. The possible mechanisms underlying these effects were alsodiscussed.Inthisinvestigation,eightymalealbinoratswereinvolved. Rats were divided into eight equal groups (10 rats each)identified asfollow:
Group1(NC):HealthygroupthisgroupservedasNormalcontrol.
Group2(FA):Ferulicacidgroup;ratsofthisgroupwerereceived FA (dissolved in saline) orally in a dose equivalent to40 mg/kg body weight daily for 19 consecutive days via oraltube.
Group 3 (LDR): Low dose of γ-irradiation (LDR) group; rats'whole-body of this group were submitted to fractionated doseofγ-irradiation(twodoseseachdose0.25Gyupto0.5Gy).
