Effect of Additives on the Sedimentation Rate of Magnesium Hydroxide

Abstract
The aim of this study is to explore the effect of addi•
tives and the influence of the complete and incomplete precipitation on the rate of sedimentation of magnesium
hydroxide obtained from synthetic solutions of
magnesium chloride and desulphated bittern.
This thesis is divided into five chapters.
The first one is the theoretical part which indicates the different sources of magnesium ions, the prepar• ation of magnesium hydroxide from bittern, pretreatment of the bittern, precipitation of magnesium hydroxide
using different bases, sources of precipitating agents,
settling process, settling of magnesium hydroxide and
factors affecting the sedimentation rate of magnesium
hydroxide.
The second one is the experimental part and begins wit
illustration of the specifications of the raw materials used in this work, followed by description of experi•
mental set-up used in bench and pilot scale studies and experimental technique.
