SYNTHESIS AND REACTIONS OF SOME NEW HETEROCYCLIC COMPOUNDS CONTAINING THIENO [2,3-b] PYRIDINE MOIETY

Abstract

The work involved in this thesis including the synthesis of some new cyclopenta[e]thieno[2,3-b]pyridine derivatives and their reactions with a variety of reagents to produce other new derivatives containing thienopyridine moiety fused with other ring systems or attached to biologically active residues. This was achieved by reinvestigating the reaction of arylidenecyanothioacetamides 223a-c with cyclopentanone which gave a mixture of 4-aryl-3-cyanocyclopenta[b]pyridine-2(lH)- thiones (224a-c) and the corresponding 7-arylidene derivatives 225a-c. These products were separated by fractional crystallization or reaction with acrylonitrile (Scheme I)
