CONDITION ASSEMSSMENT OF BRIDGE DECK USING GROUND PENETRATION RADAR

Mohamed Ata Abdel Latif Mohamed Selim;

Abstract

This research presents the recap of using GPR technique in inspection of a bridge deck located in old Cairo. A clear methodology for the data collection, processing and analysis of collected raw data is presented. Data is collected in site using ground-coupled GPR and then numerical amplitude method is used in the analysis. The research also clearly shows how to determine: 1) bridge deck slab thickness, 2) asphalt layer thickness, 3) arrangement of steel rebar of the slab and 4) plotting corrosion map. Using clustering and based on RapidMiner platform, regions of deterioration are determined and marked. GPR data interpretation is done using integration analysis method between the amplitude method and visual interpretation with threshold calibration based on K-means clustering. Simultaneously, the generated corrosion map is validated with the produced deterioration curve based on Weibull distribution and Federal Highway Administration in the United States condition ratings. The generated curve was adopted by the New York State Department of Transportation bridge inspection data collected since 1981 based on Weibull distribution. Finally, sensitivity analysis is performed to identify the formula governing the amplitudes with the rebar area based on finite elements modeling and the validated corrosion map.
