ASSESSMENT OF INJUR SEVERITY IN CHILDREN USING THE PEDIATRIC TRAUMA INDEX

Abstract


The study revealed that more admission were in the morning and afternoon shifts (46.8% and 39.9%, respectively) than the night shifts (13.3%).
Saturday and Sunday were the most loaded days of admission, (19.0 % and 17.3 % respectively).
The most loaded month of admission was July (46.5 %). The vast majority of victims (95.4%) were admitted in
the Emergency Department whereas the ICU and ophthalmology departments received 2.9 % and 1.7 % of the
cases respectively.
Circumstances of trauma
The study revealed that 83.8 % of the total injuries were accidental and 16.2 % were due to violence.
In this study violent injuries showed a dramatic rise
with age where nearly three quarters of the victims of violence (74.4%) were in the age group 10-17 years with a significantly higher percentage among boys (19.2%)than girls (9.2%).
Of the total victims of violence(n=118), the majority were interpersonal violence (16.1%), while only in one female victim (0.1 %) the violence was self-inflicted in the form of
• suicidal cut wrist, she was 16 years old.
