Unicompartmental Knee Arthroplasty versus Total Knee Arthroplasty in Treatment of Unicompartmental Knee Osteoarthritis: A Systematic Review and Meta Analysis
Mohamed Ahmed Yousuf;
Abstract
arious surgical interventions are available for the care of patients with isolated medial compartment arthritis, UKA and TKA being most common. Many surgeons have relied heavily on TKA as the standard treatment for isolated medial compartment OA because of its predictability and effectiveness in improving function and pain, as well as its durability. Recently however, there has been an increased interest in performing UKA in carefully selected patients because of improvements in surgical technique, robotic technology, and implant selection.
In this systematic review different literatures collected from different medical websites in the period from 2010 till now in whom comparison between unicompartmental or total knee arthroplasty was performed for patients with osteoarthritis. Twelve (12) literatures had fulfilled the study criteria were included in this study. In whom 1057 knees used unicompartmental arthroplasty (group 1); 497 males (47%) and 560 females (53%), and 1455 knees had total arthroplasty (group 2); 642 males (44%) and 814 females (56%), indicating that female’s predominance was observed. Their ages ranged between 63 to 80 years with mean of 67.54 ± 5.27 in UKA group and between 64.7 and 79.6 years with mean of 68.32 ± 4.42 years in TKA group. Comparison between the two groups regarding all those parameters showed statistically insignificant differences (P > 0.05).
