SEISMIC ANALYSIS OF ROCK TUNNELS

ABDELWAHHAB NABIL ALI IBRAHIM SALEM;

Abstract

This research aims to use Finite element modeling to evaluate the seismic performance of conventional rock tunnels constructed in different rock qualities with variable tunnel sizes. A case study of seismic design of rock tunnel [Kadikoy-Kartal Metro, M1-M4 switch tunnel] was used for verification and considered as a pivot case for the rational of generalization to aid in optimized static and seismic design. Quasi-static and Full-scale seismic approaches (real earthquake records and synthetic sinusoidal waves) were incorporated. The Finite element results were compared with the available analytical solutions in literature and lining stiffness effect was examined. Parametric sensitivity analyses were introduced in terms of variation of rock strength, tunnel geometry, initial support, stress reduction factor, and seismicity. Finally, design engineering form and a generalized static and seismic recommendations of rock tunnels was developed.
