Effect of Blade Pitch Angle Control on Wind Turbine Power Generation

Ahmed Mohamed Hamed Shawqran;

Abstract

The thesis addresses the effect of blade angle control on the wind turbine generated output active power. The effect of the blade angle is investigated inside the LUCAS laboratory through three modes of operation: fixed speed fixed pitch (FSFP), variable speed fixed pitch (VSFP), and variable speed variable pitch (VSVP). Moreover, the thesis presents a novel application of the adaptive proportional integral (API) blade angle controller in wind systems. The validation of the controller is carried out through comparison with the classical proportional integral derivative (PID) controller. This adaptive PI blade angle controller depends mainly on the tunned parameters. Thus, six different optimization techniques are applied to tune the controller parameters. The algorithms objective function reduces the sum square of error in power and voltage. A comparison is held between the six optimization algorithms under normal and fault conditions to outperform the optimum one. The results assured the superiority of the Harmony Search Algorithm Hybrid Equilibrium Optimization algorithm (HSA-EO) over the other optimization techniques.
The thesis also proposes modified versions of the adaptive PI to enhance its performance. The modified versions are the modified adaptive PI (MAPI), and the fractional adaptive PI (FAPI). The MAPI controller relies mainly on the second-order amplifier block, while the FAPI controller depends on the fractional power of the integral term. The validation of the modified versions is proved through comparison with several control strategies.
