- ype 1 diabetes is characterized by autoimmune destruction of the β cells leading to insulin deficiency. It accounts for 90% of childhood diabetes in the western world. The incidence has been increasing over past 2 decades and poses a global challenge. Good glycaemic control in patients with Insulin Dependent Diabetes mellitus delays the onset and slows the progression of long term complications. However, intensive treatment does not just include intensive insulin regimes but patient education, counseling and effective diabetes self-management. It can best be provided with well-sourced multidisciplinary team with focus on treatment goals and regimes, self-management, patient education and frequent clinic visits. Education is the key to successful management of childhood and adolescent diabetes with a beneficial effect on glycemic control and on psychosocial outcomes. It is advisable that quality-assured structured education is available to all young people with diabetes and their care givers.
