Application Studies of the Effect of Some Organic Compounds in Coatings Industry

Abstract

With the growing awareness of the importance to
reduce the volatile organic content emitted from paints,
recent research has relied on the use of water-based paints
as an alternative to those based on organic solvents with
significant damage to human health and the environment.
In this work we reported the synthesis of novel
groups of anionic surfactants containing oxapyridazinone
derivatives and evaluation them as co-monomer emulsifiers
in styrene–butyl acrylate emulsion.
The target compounds were prepared according to
Scheme 1. The first step was the preparation of the fatty
acids 3a-d from the reaction of di-sodium maleate 1 and
bromoalkanoic acid 2a-d.Treatments of the fatty acids 3a-d
with excess thionyl chloride yield the corresponding fatty
acid chlorides 4a-d. Stirring the fatty acid hydrazides
5a-d with chlorosulphonic acid in carbon tetrachloride at
room temperature followed by neutralization with sodium

hydroxide yielded the sulfonated fatty acid hydrazides 6ad.
Refluxing a solution of sodium salt of sulphonated fatty
acid hydrazide 6a-d and chloroacetic acid in presence of
sodium acetate and acetic anhydride for four hours affords
the target compounds oxapyridazinone derivatives 7a-d.
