Abstract


This study was carried out to assess the clinical efficacy of mouthwash
containing pomegranates peel extract and chlorhexidine mouthwash on bleeding on
brushing and counting of streptococcus mutans.
The study was carried out on sixty participants. They were selected from
outpatients’ clinic at Department of Pediatric Dentistry and Dental Public Health,
Faculty of Dentistry – Cairo University. Their age ranged from 12 to 15 years.
The participants were divided into two groups; group I used o.12% chlorhexidine
mouthwash and following oral hygiene measures, group II used pomegranate peel
extract mouthwash and following oral hygiene measures. This study was carried
out for four weeks. At baseline, scaling and polishing were carried out and after
two weeks study period, quantitative microbiological laboratory cultivation method
of salivary mutans streptococci was carried out for each participant before using
mouthwash. After additional two weeks, sulcus bleeding index scores and
questionnaire were made in addition, cultivation method of salivary mutans
streptococci were carried out to find out effect of using mouthwash.
