PREVALENCE OF ARRHYTHMIA IN PATIENTS WITH MITRAL VALVE PROLAPSE WITH AND WITHOUT MITRAL REGURGITATION WITH CORRELATION To SIGNAL-AVERAGED ELECTROCARDIOGRAPHY
Ramadan Ghaleb Mohamed;
Abstract
Mitral valve prolapse is considered to be one of the most prevalent cardiac valvular abnormalities affecting as much as
5- 10% of the population and is detectable in patients of all
age and both sexes. It is defined as echocardiographic, angiographic and pathological abnormal motion of one or both leaflets of the mitral valve into the left atrium during left ventricular systole. It is frequently associated with a click and or late systolic murmur. When leaflet edges do not coapt perfectly mitral insufficiency results and is detected by a regurgitant systolic murmur or Doppler technique. A variety of symptoms are variably associated with mitral valve prolapse : a typical chest pain, palpitation, fatigue, dyspnea, syncope and neuro-psychiatric disorders.
In this study 55 subjects were classified into three groups :
Group I : 20 patients with mitral valve prolapse and mitral regurgitation.
Group II : 20 patients with pure mitral valve prolapse.
Group III : 15 healthy subjects representing control group.
The aim of this work was to study the prevalence of arrhythmia in patients with mitral valve prolapse with or without mitral regurgitation with correlation to signal averaged electrocardiogram.
