Summary:
In developing countries education is a constant struggle on most fronts, from the development of curricula to the design of schools. There is need for change in the approaches to the design, construction and operation of public schools and safeguard the well-being of children. Regarding the building skin, the lack of adequate insulation allows solar heat loads to radiate through the building during working hours making the space that is already suffering from the internal loads caused by occupants' metabolism even more uncomfortable. The main research question is Can sustainable schools improve education environment? Egypt is divided into 8 climatic regions each one with its own demands. The most densely populated cities are Cairo, Alexandria and Asyut. These three zones since they pose the highest risks.
The methodology is a performance approach, a performance based experiment involving the manipulation of quantitative variables and the analysis of resulting data. The isolation of variables and the experimentation on each variable to understand the limiting factors that need to be adjusted will provide a more encompassing and detailed reference. The results will develop a checklist for the assessment of the sustainable public school buildings.
