STRESSORS FACING MOTHERS OF CHILDREN WITH INSULIN-DEPENDANT DIABETES MELLITUS

Abstract


Mothers of children with insulin -dependent diabetes mellitus were experiencing stressful events related to diabetic children's management tasks such as repeated insulin injection, dietary management glucocheck, dealing with hypo-hyperglycemic episodes, periodic follow- up and lab investigations.

Pediatric nurses need to be aware to mothers' stressors caused by their children's disease, and take the necessary steps to minimize these stressors. Therefore, the aim of this study is to identify the stressors perceived by mothers of children with insulin- dependent diabetes mellitus.

The study was conducted in the Diabetes Mellitus Out-patient Clinic and Medical Departments in Student Health Insurance Hospital at Sporting. A convenient sample of 200 mothers of children with insulin- dependent diabetes mellitus who are diagnosed as diabetic for 6 months or more and free from other chronic disorders comprised the study sample.

Mothers' Stressors of Children with Insulin- Dependent Diabetes Mellitus Interview Schedule was the tool used to collect the necessary data which included the demographic data about mothers and their diabetic children and the (physical, psychological and social stressors as well as stressors related to management). Every mother was individually interviewed to collect the necessary data.

The main results of this study were as follows:

Almost half of the studied mothers were in the age group 30. to less than 40 years old (49.5%)
with a mean age 39.18± 6.35 years.

The highest percentage of the studied mothers had secondary education (42.5%). The majority of the mothers were married (90.5%) and were housewives (79.5%). The majority of the mothers were living in urban areas (95%).
More than three quarters of them had 2-3 children (82%).

More than one third of the children of the studied mothers were in the age group 12 to less than 18 years old (38.5%), while 36.0% were in the age group 6 to less than 12 years old with a mean age 11.62 ± 4.2 years.

Fifty one percent of the children were females.

The highest percentage of the children were in preparatory schools (40.0%) and 30%in primary schools.

Less than half of the children of the studied mothers were diagnosed with diabetes within a period of one year to less than 4 years (42.0%), 30% were diagnosed within a period of 4 to less than 8 years.

Insulin pen was the main method of insulin administration as it was reported by 96.5%ofthe mothers of diabetic children.
