Abstract
Clinical Supervision is the process by which a hospital or health care agency ensures the delivery of the highest quality of care possible to its patients while following and complying with patient care' guidelines. Clinical supervision is believed to improve patient/ client care, and enables nurses to develop creative, efficient, and evidence-based solutions to patient problems. Also, clinical supervision provides a space for nurses to reflect about their clinical practice and feel valued and appreciated in improving patient care. Clinical supervision also appears to reduce stress, burnout, and sickness. Good systems of supervision can enable nurses to operate within their code of conduct and can help in empowering nurses to be more confident and competent.
First-line nurse manager as a clinical supervisor is responsible for assuring the conformance of nursing staff to the standards of conduct and perfonnance that are reflected in the established polices, procedures, and rules of the health care agency and the standard of nursing care. Also, the clinical supervisor has the designated authority and responsibility to plan and engage in a process by which the work of the nursing staff planned, directed, controlled, coordinated, monitored, and well evaluated. For nursing staff to be able to meet the standards established for their work, the supervisory process ideally involves education, training, mentoring, and coaching and this is the role of clinical supervisor.
Training for clinical supervisor on application of clinical supervision's process is valuable and necessary because of rapid changes in professional education and practice. The issues of adequacy and effectiveness of training, and meeting the differing supervisory skills training needs of supervisors are seen as fundamental, since education and training influence the quality of the practice of clinical supervision that supervisees receive. Appropriate education and training should enable the clinical supervisors to make positive changes, due to the opportunities and benefits clinical supervision provides for patients as well as for nursing staff.
