RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN NONSTEROIDAL ANTI-INFLAMMATORY DRUC5 INTAKE AND THE ONSET OF RENAL FAILURE
Husam Abdul Fattah Mohamed El Shebiny;
Abstract
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are among the most widely prescribed medications in the world. They constitute a rapidly expanding group of drugs that are useful for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, other arthritic conditions, dental pain and postpartum pain. The excessive use of analgesics and NASIDs is strongly associated with an increased prevalence of chronic renal insufficiency. The elderly are especially susceptible and more frequently use these medications.
The long term use ofNSAIDs may induce a variety of acute and chronic renal lesions. The principal lesion induced is tubulointerstitial nephropathy which results in renal papillary necrosis and progressive chronic renal failure. The tubulointerstitial nephropathy associated with NSAIDs presented massive proteinuria and is generally reversible on discontinuation of the drug.
