Multidisciplinary Approach in the management of Myelomeningocele

Abstract

In this study we discussed myelomeningocele in its various pictures with the associated congenital anomalies and problems result from it. We clarified the role of multidisciplinary team (Neurosurgeon, Orthopaedic surgeon, Urologist, Psychologist, Neonatologist and plastic surgeon) to deal with such case as if it is at meningocele center. Associated hydrocephalus is a common problem with myelomeningocele so we discussed timing of shunt placement surgery also the technique of surgical repair and intra-uterine surgery. Dealing with myelomeningocele case requires the good diagnosis pre-operatively to save the neural elements if possible, also the intact post-operative observation to deal with early complications not only at hospital but also after discharge and till school age for neurological, psychological and developmental progress and functions.
