Mona Hassan Saleh Mohamed;

Abstract

Our clinical trial study was conducted to estimate folic acid & vitamin B12 levels among children with drug resistant idiopathic epilepsy and find out its relation to seizure control as well as the cognitive functions.
Our study included 25 children with drug resistant idiopathic epilepsy their ages ranged from 5-18 years, they were 13 males and 12 females, the duration of epilepsy ranged from 1-11 years & 25 apparently healthy age and sex matched children served as controls.
In this study we found that mean serum levels of vitamin B12& folic acid were significantly lower in epileptic patients compared to controls.
Also, we found that the patients group has significantly lower values of all items of WISC test compared to the control group and there was no statistically significant difference between patients and controls in different items of Benton test except in expected error score and difference error score.
There was a highly significant increase in mean serum levels of vitamin B12& folic acid after 3months of supplementation in patientsʾ group.
