COMPOSITE FRAMES WITH SEMI-RIGID JOINTS

Abstract

Conventional analysis of framed structure idealizes the actual behavior of beam-to-column connections to either pin jointed or rigid jointed. The predicted response of the idealized structure may be quite unrealistic compared to the response of the actual structure. Pinned joint ends (hinged) produce critical moment at beam mid span which increases the beam cross section. Rigid joint analysis produces critical moments at the two beam ends which affects the connection design and beam cross section. So, the most obvious advantage of a design utilizing semi-rigid joints is that beam moments are balanced leading to lighter beams and connections. From the structural point of view, joint properties greatly affect the overall frame deflection and internal force distribution.
