EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES ON THE EFFECT OF CADMIUM AS A POLLUTANT ON CERTAIN MAMMALIAN ORGANS

Hala Fahmy Abd-Ellah Sayed;

Abstract

he present investigation is performed to estimate the median lethal dose (LD5o) of cadmium chloride for male al-
bino rats Rattus norvegicus, weighing 100-110 g, and to study the harmful effects of three different concentrations (1/20
LD50• 1110 LD50 and 115 LD5o) of this metal on male rats from several points (mortality rate, morphology, hematology
as well as gross and histological features of the kidney and

testis).

The obtained results revealed that the subcutaneous

LD50 of cadmium chloride appeared to be 27.66 mg/kg body weight after 24 hours.

Rats treated with 1120 LD50 of cadmium chloride showed neither mortality nor severe symptoms, while they ex hibited retardation in growth throughout the whole experiment compared with the controls. in rats treated with 1/10 LD50
and 115 LD50 of cadmium chloride, mortality, behavioral al

terations and growth retardation-followed by a decrease in body weight-were recorded.
