Role of Phototherapeutic Keratectomy in treatment of various corneal lesions

Abstract

SUMMARY
Appendectomy is the most common surgical procedure performed in the field of general surgery.
Open appendectomy, as described by Mc Burney in 1894, remained the gold standard for the treatment of acute appendicitis for more than a century. The advent and rapid acceptance of laparoscopic surgery led to the idea of performing laparoscopic appendectomy.
Laparoscopic appendectomy has emerged as a safe procedure with potential advantages including diagnostic and therapeutic values especially in females in their reproductive age.
Laparoscopic appendectomy is safe and feasible. Despite that the operating time for laparoscopic appendectomy is still higher than that for open procedure; the laparoscopic approach has several advantages over open appendectomy.
Laparoscopic appendectomy allows more thorough examination of the abdominal cavity and avoids unnecessary laparotomy, it has lesser incidence of wound infection, shorter hospital stay, less need for post operative analgesia and faster return of patients to normal activities. Moreover, it is very useful in reaching an exact diagnosis in equivocal cases in females during their childbearing period and allows definitive treatment of other abdominal or pelvic pathologies which causes lower abdominal pain.
It is strongly recommended not to hesitate to convert laparoscopic procedure to open surgery when indicated for the sake of the safety of the patient.
