GENETICAL AND BIOCHEMICAL STUDIES ON SOME VICIA FABA CULTIVARS WITli ..
Walid Mohammed EL-Rodeny;
Abstract
The present investigation was conducted under insect free isolation cage and in naturally heavily infested soil with Orobanche crenafa seeds at Sakha Agricultural Research Station (SARS), during the 1997/1998 season all the possible Fl cross combinations (without reciprocals) among the seven faba bean parents were conducted under the insect fi-ee cage by hand. Crossings were tried again during the 1998/1999 season also under the insect free cage. All the F1 crosses
(2 I) and their seven parental genotypes were evaluated under heavily infested soil with Orobanche crenata seeds at insect free cage during the 1999/2000 season. All the experiment Lab. work was conducted in the Genetics Dept., Faculty of Agric., Kafr EI-Sheikh, Tanta University.
The characters under study were performed according to Griffing (1956). For the free insect cage trial, means of each of the seven parent and their F J'S were subjected to analysis using Model I, Methods II for Orobanche infested trial results. The most important results could be
summarized as follows:
1- It may be noted that assessment ofthe resistance could be based on the number of haustoria in e connection with weight or volume of the tested plant roots. The data analysis showed that few haustoria were found on certain faba bean genotypes (X. 667, Giza 402, Giza 674, cross 11
and 14) with relatively small root system as compared to the highly susceptible cultivars ( ILB938 and Giza Blanca).
2- Negative correlations between number of Orobanche per plot and number of pods per plant, number of seeds per plant (gm), seed yield per plant (gm) and 1 00-seed weight (gm). While, positive correlations were detected between the mean number of Orobanche attachment per plant and root size.
3- The mean squares for the 11 different characters of the seven parental genotypes and their 21
F1's were significant All sources of variations, i.e. parental genotype and their 21 F ]'s showed highly significant effects for all the studied traits. The significance of genotypes as a source of variation indicates the existence of genotype variability among the studied genotypes particularly for reaction to Orobanche.
