SCOUR DOWNSTREAM HYDRAULIC STRUCTURES

Abstract

A study of the local scour downstream box culverts was experimentally investigated in the Hydraulics Laboratory, Faculty of Engineering, Alexandria University.

The main objective of this study is the investigation of the maximum equilibrium scour hole dimensions formed downstream box culverts. Three main groups of experimental runs were conducted using three different kinds of nonuniform sand mixtures of the same mean particle diameter and different geometric standard deviation. The effect of submergence downstream the culvert was also considered.

Scour depth along the channel centerline was measured and longitudinal sections were drawn showing the values and the positions of the maximum scour depth, maximum scour length and also the scour depth just downstream the culvert. Analysis of the experimental results was carried out and it led to the development of a group of equations that related the different hydraulic parameters, the culvert dimensions and the sand mixture parameters to the scour hole dimensions.
