Abstract

Obesity is a public health problem in developed countries and it is prevalence is increasing rapidly in developing nation's worldwide, it has reached an epidemic proportions with more than 1.7 billion individuals worldwide are thought to be obese or overweight, and it is associated with significant morbidity and mortality.

In 1998 Wf:!O described the phenomena of raising obesity by term of" global epidemic of obesity" . The prevalence of obesity has increased steadily over the past ten years, and it affects children and adult• age
groups, males and females.

The need to treat obesity arises because it is associated with co morbidities that result in impaired quality of life and reduction in life
expectancy of about 9 years in women and 12 years in mcri.

There are different modalities of treatment of obesity including diet
control, exercise and behavioral therapy beside the surgical therapy.

Surgical t]lerapy for obesity (bariatric surgery) is the only available therapeutic modality associated with clinically significant and sustained weight loss in patients with morbid obesity associated with comorbidities and the optimal results are obtained with the involvement of a multidisciplinary team (including physician/surgeon, nutritionist, dieticians, psychologist, and/or psychiatrist).

The Modifications in the original procedures and the development of new techniques have led to 3 basic concepts for bariatric surgery which are Restrictive, MalabsorjJtive and Mixed procedures.
