ANGIOGENESIS IN CHILDREN WITH INSULIN DEPENDENT DIABETES MELLITUS, RELATION TO COMPLICATIONS AND METABOLIC CONTROL

Abstract


This study was conducted in the Pediatric Department, Assiut University Hospitals from January 2000 to Februry 2002. It included 60 children, 25 males and 35 females, known to have type I diabetes melitus. According to their duration of diabetes they were classified into 2 groups. Group I included 30 children, 13 males and 17 females, with duration of diabetes::; 5 years. Their mean duration of diabetes was 3.29 ± 0.13 years (range 2.00 to 4.50 years) and their mean age was
10.40 ± 3.01 years (range 6 to 16 years). Group II included another 30 children, 12 males and 18 females, with duration of diabetes > 5 years. Their mean duration of diabetes was 7.00 ± 1.34 years (range 5.5 to 10 years) and their mean age was
14.00 ± 2.45 years (range 9 to 18 years). Twenty apparently healthy children of matched age and sex, 10 males and 10 females, their mean age was 12.40 ± 3.83 years (range 6 to 18 years), with no family history of diabetes mellitus in their first degree relatives, were recruited from the Pediatric Outpatient Clinic as a control
