EVALUATION OF NUTRITIONAL CARE FOR DIABETIC INPATIENTS IN UNIVERSITYHOSPITALS

Abstract


This study was performed to investigate the quality of food service for diabetic patients in Tanta University hospital to assess the adequacy and accuracy of the diet offered to hospitalized patients and to determine factors affecting patient's attitude toward hospital diet.

A total of 100 adult diabetic inpatients of ages ranged from 40 to

70 years were selected. Fifty cases were IDDM and 50 were NIDDM. Out of the total sample studied there were 54 males and 46 females.

Clinical investigation for the studied sample was done twice at admission and when discharge and included: blood glucose level fasten and after two hours, hemoglobin level and body mass index.

To asses the adequacy and accuracy of hospital therapeutic diets, a patients follow up form was designed and used. Food items constituting each meal offered for each patient were weighed and recorded for 3 successive days.

The nutritive value of these diets were calculated usmg the Egyptian food composition tables simmilarly the nutritive value of the hospitals schedules diet (recorded) and food items brought to patients from outside the hospital were calculated.

The nutritive value of the offered diets were investigated and compared to corresponding recorded and recommended.
