Needs Assessment of Down Syndrome Children and Their Parents

Abstract


Down syndrome is the most frequent chromosomal aberration in live born infants, results in most cases from the presence in all cells of an extra copy of chromosome 21 (Trisomy 21). It is responsible for about one third of all cases of moderate to sever mental retardation.

Down syndrome occw:s commonly worldwide in all races and both sexes equally, with frequency of about 1 in
1000 live birth.


Anyone working with children needs to derstand their basic physical care, where children require physical care in order to grow and develop mto health individuals. Children with Down syndrome have special needs refers to they have specific difficulties, particularly in all area of their growth and development.

The parents of children with Down syndrome need to talk with a professional counselor who understands the nature of their problems and fmd solutions for these problems they also need to keep daily routines as normal as possible.

The nurse role is in satisfying the parent needs through providing information that concerning care of their children with Down syndrome.
