Abstract
SUMMARY
T
he present study was conducted on 20 females children aged 11 to 12 year who were completely healthy only presenting with minor complaints to the Pediatric Outpatient Clinic, Children's Hospital, Ain Shams University.
These children were subjected to:
1- Full history including:
a. Assessment of daily dietary calcium intake through Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ).
b. Assessment of duration of sunlight exposure (hours per week).
c. Assessment of duration of physical activity (hours per week).
d. Assessment of socioeconomic status according to the criteria of El-Bohy (1983).
2- Physical examination including:
a. General and systemic examinations.
b. Measurement of weight, height and BMI together with calculation of their SDS's.
c. Blood samples were collected for estimation of serum levels of calcium, phosphorus and alkaline phosphatase.
d. Assessment of whole body BMD, lumbar spine BMD, left femoral neck BMD, whole body BMC, lean body mass and whole body fat.
The study showed that:
1. The mean value of whole body BMD was 0.87± 0.06 g/cm2.
2. The mean value of lumbar spine BMD was 0.03 ± 0.69 g/cm2.
3. The mean value of femoral neck BMD was 0.69 ± 0.12 g/cm2.
4. The mean value of subtotal body BMD was -0.12 ± 0.75 g/cm2.
5. The mean value of femoral neck BMD was 0.77±0.08 g/cm2.
6. The mean value of femoral neck Z-score was -0.11±0.74.
7. The mean value of subtotal body BMD was 0.79±0.05.
8. The mean value of whole body BMC (G) WAS 1798.73±2511.37.
