Abstract
The refractory GERD can result from several factors and could be associated withor without esophagitis, Refractory GERD may also lead to serious sequelae, including esophagitis, strictures, ulcers or barrett’s esophagus.
The main aim of this study was to assess the role of esophago-gastro-duodenal endoscopy in detection of causes and complications of refractory GERD patients who failed to respond to twice daily proton pump inhibitors for 2 monthes period.
40 patients were recruited for this study, all patients were subjected to upper esophago-gastro-duodenal endoscopy and lower esophageal biopsy, histopathological examination was done for the biopsy.
The study showed that there are different causes and complications of refractory GERD detected by upper esophago-gastro-duodenal endoscopy as: eosinophilic esophagitis, hiatus hernia, erosive reflux disease, non erosive reflux disase ,barrett‘s esophagus, gastritis, gastric erosions, gastric ulcerations, duodenal erosions and duodenal ulcers.
