Ego Functions and Comorbid Anxiety Disorders in Substance Use Disorders

Reham Mohamed El.Askary;

Abstract

The presence of anxiety symptoms is evident among the substance dependent patients, however they are not severe enough to diagnose any anxiety disorder. Some evidence support the self medicating hypothesis as a way to overcome these anxiety symptoms while others explain them as secondary to the drug intake. Also, the ego functions ofthese patients are remarkably defective rendering them vulnerable to affective flooding so that they use the drugs to overcome these feelings. Hence, we can approve of the hypothesized correlation between the anxiety symptoms and defective ego functions among the substance dependents.
