EVALUATION OF THE DIAGNOSTIC ACCURACY OF SALIVARY ANTI-SALMONELLA TYPHILIPOPOLYSACCHARIDE IGA IN PATIENTS WITH TYPHOID FEVER

Abstract

T yphoid fever is one of the most serious infectious diseases that threats the public health on a global scale. The diagnosis of typhoid fever based on a combination of the clinical picture, isolation of Salmonella typhi from body fluids, and the Widal test . Serodiagnosis of typhoid fever has been attempted since the nineteenth century by Widal test. The test was based on demonstrating the presence of agglutinins in the serum of infected patients, against H and O antigens of Salmonella enterica serotype typhi. While the definitive diagnosis depends on the isolation of S.typhi from blood, urine, stool or other body fluids but it needs technical and laboratory facilities which may be not found in developing countries where typhoid fever is endemic ,for these reasons rapid , easy and accurate laboratory methods for diagnosis of typhoid fever are needed. The aim of the present study is to compare the sensitivity and specificity of salivary and serum anti-salmonella typhi lipopolysaccharide IgA with the widely used Widal test foe serodiagnosis of typhoid fever . For this purpose, 60 subjects were selected from Qena Fever Hospital . They were classified into three groups: Group I: Thirty patients were choosen from a pool of 100 subjects attending Qena fever hospital throught the period from December 2012 till March 2014, who were Widal test positive and clinically diagnosed as typhoid. Group II:fifteen patients who were feverish but with Widal test negative, who were selected from patients of Qena Fever Hospital.
