Abstract


The aim of the work is to study the effect of cigarette smoking in Active and Passive smokers on the serum level of lgE, IL-4, IL-5 and eosinophils.


Forty individuals were included in this study (15 Active smokers, 15 Passive smokers and 10 Control).

All individuals were subjects to:


• Full history with special reference to : age, sex, Sl, Occupation, presence of any chest symptoms.

• Full clinical examination.,


• Plain chest X- ray (PA and lateral view).


• Complete blood picture.


• Urine and stool analysis.


• Pulmonary function tests before and after bronchodilatation.


• Estimation of serum level of lgE, IL-4 and IL-5.


There was no statistical significant difference between the levels of IL-4, IL-5 and lgE between smokers (Active and Passive) and non- smokers. However levels of lgE, IL-4 and IL-5 was higher in Passive than Active smokers and the difference was statistically in
significant.
