ISOLATED SYSTOLIC HYPERTENSION IN THE ELDERLY: A STUDY OF ARTERIAL COMPLIANCE AND PERIPHERAL RESISTANCE

HALA MUSTAFA ELFERGANY;

Abstract

Blood pressure ,particularly systolic blood pressure ,tend to increase progressively with age ,elderly people with hypertension have a greater risk of cardivascular disease.

This study was performed on 70 subjects 50 pateints with isolated systolic hypertension and 20 controls using the non invasive colour coded duplex technique ( Acuson 128 xp 10 c)to assess the arterial compliance and peripheral resistance and the effect of diminished artrial compliance and increase peripheral resistance in the production of isolated systolic hypertension .

Results of the study shows significant statistical difference in the arterial compliance between patients and control, higher peripheral resistance in the patient group but without significant statistical difference between the patient and the control group.
