Study of the Natural History of Cyrenaica Region During the Greek Era

Abstract

The purpose of the present study is to investigate the Natural History of Cyrenaica during the Greek Era. The present thesis is composed of four chapters including numerous study subject related illustrations, figures, charts and maps, an introduction, a conclusion a bibliography and a resource annex. The first chapter – Cyrenaica Geographic features. In this chapter, I tried to raise the following question: Were the Greeks well aware of the region nature before establishing the City of Cyrene in about 631 BC? I pointed out the most important stories tackling the establishment of Cyrene. I also made may best to study the region boundaries and geographic features, referring to Ancient Greek Cyrenaica natural ports. The second chapter – Geographic locations of Ancient Libyan tribes (During the Greek Era) and significant water sources in Cyrenaica. In this chapter, I have mapped Ancient Libyan tribes' geographic locations. To this end, I relied on the Classical Period writers and the work of Herodotus. In this section, I pointed out the region most significant water sources. The third chapter – Flora (Vegetation) in Cyrenaica during the Greek Era. I discussed in this chapter the most important types of vegetation in the said region, which still exist until this day. I tried to establish its presence in the region by corroborating evidence in study subject related resources, including the Classical Period writers and archeological findings and engravings found in Cyrenaica. The fourth chapter – Libyan fauna in Cyrenaica during the Greek Era. I discussed in this chapter the most important types of fauna in the said region at the said period, establishing its presence by corroborating evidence from numerous classical sources, archeological findings and fossils in different locations in the region.
