Sustained Release Corticosteroids Intravitreal Implant Device in Management of Uveitis

David Bakheet Fahmy;

Abstract

Uveitis is the inflammation of uveal tract which is composed of iris, ciliary body and choroid.
In this study we discussed anatomy of uveal tract in details concerning the arterial supply of uveal tract as it has a major role in uveitis to know how uveitis occur and which part is affected.
Uveitis is classified anatomically into anterior, intermediate and posterior. It is also classified according to grading system, inflammation criteria and others.
Use of these tools confers better definition of clinical course of the disease and efficient evaluation for new therapies used in treatment of uveitis.
Explaining intermediate and posterior uveitis with their causes, diagnostic criteria, investigations and prognosis is important in defining which type of treatment is used.
It is clearly that uveitis a vision threatening inflammation of uvea is prevalent worldwide. SO, early diagnosis and treatment of uveitis can prevent vision loss.
Sustained-release corticosteroid implants has shown to be a promising strategy in treatment of non infectious uveitis and to avoid side effects of repeated injection of intravitreal triamcinolone.
Different types of implants are available, with various mechanisms, duration, and side effects. Ample experience has shown the effectiveness of Ozurdex, but in patients with chronic disease punctuated by recurrences, a treatment duration longer than 6 months is desirable. The fluocinolone acetonide implants have demonstrated increased duration of efficacy, but they have a lot of side effects such as cataract and glaucoma.
