Abstract


Summary and Conclusion
T

his study was done in El-Abbassia Chest Hospital in the period from January 2012 to December 2014 depending on data collection from records of the patients who were admitted in the hospital during this period. This study aimed at studying the pattern of pulmonary tuberculosis in patients admitted to El-Abbasia Chest Hospital during the period 2012-2014.
Data was collected and analyzed and the following was found:
Total number of sputum positive pulmonary TB cases was 1930 cases. Male patients counted for 1595, (82.6%) cases while female cases counted for 335, (17.4%).
Number of patients admitted decreased at 2013 (607) than 2012 (674), then reincreased at 2014 (649) but still lower than 2012. Lowest rates were in winter months (10, 11, 12, 1), while highest rates were in summer (8, 9) months.
Incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis was high in the age group from 20:29 years (24.7%), followed by age group 30:39 years (22.4%). The lowest occurrence was in the age group > 80 years (0.3%), followed by the age group 70:79 years (2.6%).
Regarding nationality of patients, non-egyptians represents minority of cases and the rate was increasing. (2.1%, 3.3%, 5.4% respectively).
Regarding marital status, Married cases represented more than half of cases, the frequency of statuses was constant.married patients represented (60%) of cases, while singles (37%), widowed (2%) and divorced (1%).
Classification of tuberculous patients according to occupation showed that the highest prevalence of tuberculous infection affecting Manual workers (43.3%), followed by Non-Workers (including jobless,housewives & on pension) (26.9%), then drivers with a percentage of (8.2%), officials (7.3%), students (5.7%) and the lowest percentage for food related workers (4.4%), coffee shop workers (1.8%), farmers (1.2%) and lastly prisoners (1.2%).
According to case definition new cases were more than two thirds of cases, and its frequency was increasing (67.7%, 70.8%, 72.4%), while defaulter cases represented (17.4%, 14.5%, 12.8%) respectively, relapsed cases were (12.5%, 10.7%, 11.7%) & least percentage was for cases of treatment failure (2.5%, 4%, 3.1%).
