Prevalence of Cytomegalovirus ( CMV) in Chronic Haemodialysis Patients

Abstract


Human cytomegalovirus is one of the herpes viruses which '" is acquired throughout life. CMV infections have been noted in many types of immunocompromised patients but are most notable
in organ transplant recipients. Patients undergoing dialysis due to

renal failure are immunocompromised and subjects to blood transfusion.


The aim of this study is to assess the presence of HCMV in patients with chronic renal failure undergoing dialysis and candidates to organ transplantation.


The study included sixty patients with chronic renal failure undergoing haemodialysis in the dialysis department Theodore Bilharz Research Institute and 10 normal healthy .subjects as controls.


Patients were subjected to regular haemodialysis of different duration with history of blood transfusion sittings. The patients groups comprised 51 males and 9 females, their ages ranged between 25 and 65 years.


Patients were classified into 3 groups, group I comprised 30 patients with frequent blood transfusion, group II comprised 15 patients with infrequent blood transfusion and group III comprised.
