RECENT MRI TECHNIQUES APPLICATION IN NEUROPSYCHIATRY
Mohammad Saeed Alsorogi;
Abstract
In this review, we try to cover most o the recet MRI techniques approved in the last few years and its application in the neuropsychiatry giving hint on its advantage over other imaging techniques like CT scan, PET, SPECT and conventional MRI.
Those techniques are:
• Diffusion and perfusion MRI
• Diffusion tensor imaging
• Magnetization transfer MRI
• Fluid- Attenuated Inversion Recovery (FLAIR)
• Proton Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS)
• Magnetic resonance microscopy (MRS)
• Functional Magnetic Resonance imaging (fMRI)
As an introduction, we reviewed the general idea beyond each technique and then we discussed in the following chapters the application of each technique in the different neuropsychiatry disease.
Regarding, the cerebrovascular disease, the diffusion and perfusion techniques had a great impact on diagnosis and management for patient with acute stroke, also we try to show its importance as a prerequisites for increasing the time window for thrombolytic therapy.
In the next chapter we discussed the demylinating disease, remindiqg our self with the great impact of the MRI on the diagnosis of Multiple sclerosis .Now the new MRI technique especially the MTR can detect the demylinating lesion very early before the conventional MRI technique maybe up to two years.
Then we discussed the infectious disease, and how can we differentiate the space occupying lesions in the brain, also we focused on the role of MRI in the early diagnosis of viral encephalitis,
