Clinical and Pathological Evaluation of the Long Term Steroid Therapy in Muscular Dystrophies

Abstract


This study was carried out on 31 patients with muscular dystrophies to evaluate the effect of prednisone given at dose of0.75 mg/kg per day for 6 successive months.

Patients were examined and classified as follows: 18 patients with DMD, 6 patients with BMD and 7 patients with LGMD.

All patients were admitted to neurology department of Assiut

University Hospitals, all patients were subjected to the following:

At the beginning of the study:

(1) Complete physical and neurological examination including assessment of motor power timed function and stages of disability of the limbs.

(2) Neurophysiologic studies including EMG of proximal and distal muscules of both upper and lower limbs.

(3) Serum CPK level.

(4) Muscle biopsy from calf muscle obtained by either open surgery or tru-cut needle.

After" 6 months of prednisone treatment: (1) Complete physical and neurological examination. (2) Serum CPK level.
(3) Muscle biopsy.
