Abstract

Patients with cirrhosis, complicated by upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage are prone to develop SBP (Rolando et al., 1991).

Bacterial infection of ascitic fluid in the absence of an apparent intraabdominal source of infection is defined as spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (Lovet et al., 1993).

Diagnosis of SBP is based on clinical suspiciOn and analysis of ascitic fluid especially white cell count and culture in blood culture bottles.

So the aim of our study is to compare the prevalence of developing SBP among (50) patients with chronic liver disease suffering from gastrointestinal bleeding in relation ·to the mode of treatment of the bleeding episode the patients divided into 3 groups :
I. (26) patients received endoscopic variceal sclerotherapy

(EVS).

II. (13) patients received endoscopic variceal ligation (EVL). Ill. (11) patients received (medical treatment).

The selected 50 patients with history of haematemsis or melena which were treated with sclerotherapy, band ligation
