Abstract


Varicella is a common infection in childhood, 90% of infections occurs in children between the ages 1 and 14 years.


The aim of the work was to assess the status of VZV
infection in a population sector of school-age children 5-8 and
12-15 years old, to serve as a pre-vaccination survey before the possible implementation of vaccination program in Egypt.


Antibodies to VZV were measured with the commercially available ELISA Kit supplied by Virotech, Genzyme, Germany, in 80 children; 40 healthy immunocompetent and 40 with various degrees of immunosuppression due to a hematologic disorder.


In the population studied, 51.3% and 64% were seropositive among the healthy and immunodeficient patients respectively (P>0.05).
