Abstract

Excess salt intake is strongly linked to increase in blood pressure (hypertension) and the development of kidney disease. Thus, the present study was carried out to study the effects of hypertonic saline solution (2%) intake from different biological angles such as, aldosterone hormone, some electrolytes, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, oxidative stress of the kidney tissue, kidney function, liver function, glucose, lipid profile and the histopathological changes of the kidney and the adrenal gland.
Also, the present work was planned to investigate the influence and safety of proximol (Halfa bar extract), lasilactone and their combination on the same biological angles that disrupted by hypertonic saline solution.

The results of the present study can be summarized as follows
Physiological parameters
1) aldosterone hormone, sodium , calcium and potassium ions
In the renal-stressed group, there were a significant increase in the levels of aldosterone, sodium, calcium and a significant decrease in potassium as compared to the control group. Although the treatment of renal stressed rats with proximol, lasilactone and their combination reduced the increased level of aldosterone induced in the renal stressed rats, aldosterone level was still higher than the control value. In addition, the treatment with proximol, lasilactone and their combination restored the significant increase in sodium to a non significant change as compared to the control group. However, potassium was restored to a control like values, but it showed a significant decrease below the control and the model group with the combined treatment. Although, calcium was restored to a non significant change by proximol as compared to the control group, the lasilactone and the combination groups caused an increase in the level of calcium.
2) Systolic and diastolic blood pressure
In the present study, rats drinking hypertonic saline solution showed a significant increase in systolic and diastolic blood pressure. The increase in the systolic and diastolic pressure in the renal stressed rats that induced by hypertonic saline solution intake were decreased by daily treatment with proximol,
