BOTANICAL AND PHYTOCHEMICAL STUDIES ON BIXA ORELLANA L. CULTIVATED IN EGYPT

KHALED AHMED SAAD SHAMS;

Abstract

Macro and micromorphology of Bixa Orellana L (Family Bixaceae) were studied and revealed complete description of plant parts and seed surface scan in addition to the characteristic anatomical features of plant parts.

Cultivation aspects dealt with trials of cultivation of Bixa Orellana L. plant for the first time in Egypt on large scale in two different localities either in Aswan Botanical Garden (represented clay-loamy soil) or in the Equatorial Farm ofKoom-Ombo (represented sandy soil).

In addition, a rapid micro-propagation of Bixa orellana L. was carried out through an in vitro protocol for the propagation of the plant using cotyledonary nodes as well as nodal stem explants from mature plant. The produced plantlets were acclimatized successfully to the in vivo Conditions. This work is believed to be the first dealing with such subject,

Investigation of the carotenoids of the plant was resulted in the isolation of bixin C25H3o04, the major coloring matter of annatto that
identified using TLC, UV, MS, 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR. Also, P-carotene

(C4oH56) and lutein (C4oH5602), two of the minor carotenoids of Bixa ore/lana seeds, were isolated and identified by co-chromatography with authentic samples on thin layer chromatography (TLC).
