Abstract
Burn injury is the most severe type of trauma known. It results in many pathophysiological changes. These changes almost affect all body systems. One of the most important effects of these changes is the post burn hypermetabolic State. It begins shortly after burn injury and persists till complete burn wounds closure. This hypermetabolic state results also in marked decrease in the lean body mass, especially skeletal muscles, and marked weight loss and if it affects the respiratory muscles, occurrence of respiratory failure is eminent. If this hypermetabolic state is not corrected early and promptly, serious complications might occur.
During the recovery phase of major burn, patients has weak skeletal muscle power and hypoproteinemia. Providing adequate amounts of calories, proteins, vitamins and trace elements, in excess of the normal requirements, act as a substrate for this hypermetabolic state is a major corner stone in the burn management •
Early and adequate enteral feeding alone still has no good result unless an anabolic agent is added. The mathematical formulas was used to calculate the extra needs of patients included in this study as used by Dembling 1997 and Sutherland formula 1979 for protein diet and fixed non-protein calories used by Dembling 1997.
